On your bike: cycling on Anglesey
The magical island of Anglesey, where the rolling green hills meet the sea, is a superb natural playground to explore by bike.
Anglesey enjoys one of the most attractive and varied landscapes in Britain. As well as the breathtakingly-beautiful 125-mile coastline and attractive nature reserves, there are coves and limestone cliffs to explore. No wonder one-third of the island is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and attracts around two million visitors each year.
With so many things to see when you visit Anglesey, cycling is a popular way to get around this Welsh island. You can cover a lot of ground in a day to explore stunning natural landscapes, historic sites, standing stones, a World Heritage Site castle, and the village with the longest name in Europe – Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.
Anglesey is also a great choice for cycling holidays or to discover new places by bike. It has hundreds of miles of quiet roads to ride. You can take a series of short scenic routes. Work up to longer, faster trails. Explore inland. Tackle challenging climbs. Pootle along pretty coastal routes. All this, plus fresh sea air and coastal views or mountain views – including Snowdonia across the Menai Strait – that will take your breath away!
Bike rides on Anglesey
There are plenty of options for your bike rides, such as the Tour de Môn non-competitive race route. You can tackle the entire Tour de Môn course of 106 miles around the island starting and ending in Holyhead or the fun 3.5-mile family route.
Two favourite circular cycle routes on Anglesey are Lôn Lâs Cefni and Lôn Las Copr or the Copper Trail. This link leads to the two routes and maps.
The Copper Trail is a fantastic day out as the 34-mile circular tour takes you to the only working windmill in Wales as well as the must-visit copper mine at Parys Mountain. The landscape is unusual, to say the least, and the views are incredible. Wander around this dramatic terrain to marvel at the ancient copper mine’s intense colours from reds and oranges through to purples and blacks.
Lôn Las Cefni is a 13-mile offering an easy ride for all the family to enjoy fabulous nature and wildlife. It takes you through ancient woodland, a nature reserve and along the coast as well as the historic market town of Llangefni.
Other easy family rides can be found on Holy Island with its picturesque coves and beaches as well as views of Holyhead Mountain. There’s even more to inspire you to join the cycling fraternity here. Check out these top 20 cycling routes in Anglesey for all abilities.
We recommend you take your time to visit as many Anglesey attractions as you can during your cycle ride. Why not take a picnic on the beach or in the woodlands? Stop to enjoy the heady scent of wild herbs and flowers. Enjoy the colours of the wildflowers such as fen violets, chamomile, harebells, welsh poppies, meadow saffron and Anglesey’s county flower, the spotted rock-rose.
Look out for wildlife on sea and land including cormorants, puffins, terns, red squirrels, lizards, stoats, weasels, butterflies, grey seals and dolphins. And make sure your phone is fully charged for taking memorable photos to remind you of your stay.
Bike hire on Anglesey
If you want to hire a bike, there are several companies on the island including Anglesey Bikes in Llangefni, where you can hire a bike with a helmet for a half-day or your entire holiday, and Cycle Wales, also in Llangefni, which has standard bikes and electric bikes for hire.
